When figuring out how to automate something in Modded Minecraft many people will just look up a guide on YouTube follow it to the letter. While this does work in many cases and you definitely can learn from playing this way, I wanted to talk about a couple of things I do to help me plan out my automation builds and figure out problems myself.
So lets dive straight in with an example in the pack Enigmatica 2: Expert. We need cubic boron nitride for a recipe we want to craft but it looks quite confusing to setup with a lot of different chemicals required.
How do I overcome this?
I use flowcharts to help myself visualise and plan out each step in my build. What is a flowchart? It is a diagram of actions in a complex system. There is a lot of sites online you can make these on or simply just write them down on a piece of paper.
So we are making cubic boron nitride, lets work backwards from the end product to figure out what steps we need to produce it.
In the image above I have worked backwards from our end product making sure to show each step required so I clearly know what order I need to do things in. I colour code the different steps aswell so that i can easily differentiate between what is what. Yellow is machines, Blue is what is produced and green are our starting points. Now it is really easy for me to set up within the my base as I have this visualization to refer to.
If we wanted to add this as a requestable item in out AE2 system we would finish it off by placing an AE2 interface next to the melter with a processing pattern set to 1 Boron ingot = 1 Cubic Boron Nitride then pipe the finished product from the pressurizer back into the interface. Job done!
Now I used a specific item as an example but this can be used for automating anything you’d like not just the item I used. Break it down step by step like I have above and you’ll easily be able to see the steps you need to automate it.
